Sophie May "Tiny Dictator"

Sophie May reclaims the narrative of OCD by condemning the ‘Tiny Dictator’ in her mind.

Sophie May has perfected the skillset of a modern poet. Having evolved from TikTok fame during the pandemic, the London based singer songwriter has practised singing to thousands of people from her bedroom on a daily basis. Starting on a social media stage, Sophie May has transformed into a captivating solo performer – her dazzling yet comforting stage presence adds to the acoustic intimacy of her music. Her folk pop style blends often bluesy chord progressions played softly on acoustic guitar, illustrated by a rich vocal tone and delicate vibrato. Her unique lyrical approach is defined by her exquisite contrast of heartbreak and humour. She is known for her poetically frank verses; a line from her hit single ‘Bruises and Scratches’ depicts young love with a cynical twist: ‘maybe she’s in love with him/ that or methamphetamine’.

Sophie May’s most recent release shifts this frankness into an even higher gear; ‘Tiny Dictator’ seeks to deconstruct the stigma and misrepresented narrative of OCD and intrusive thoughts. The single is the leading track to her upcoming EP, ‘Deep Sea Creatures’ which is out on 21st June and features collaborations with producers Chloe Kraemer and Matt Maltese.

Announcing the single on her Instagram, Sophie May said “I hope it brings some peace of mind to anyone who is struggling, as well as giving those who find it hard to understand some clarity. Intrusive thoughts are distressing, demanding and really really hard to talk about”. The hook, ‘I’ve got a tiny dictator controlling me in my mind’ personifies her OCD and separates the thought from the thinker. Her delicate vocals contrast with the often slightly shocking lyrics: she sings ‘oh god, what if I’m a paedophile’ over a lilting instrumental. The track has an intimate production, again forefronted by Sophie May’s delicate yet powerful voice, backdropped to a softly strummed acoustic guitar and floating harmonies. Whilst as a listener we may be taken aback by the sweet voice singing ‘can’t have sex / without picturing my own mother’s face’, the song is a practical and powerful antidote to the dictator ‘poisoning every single one of my thoughts’. The lyrics are vulnerable, honest and startling; the song’s purpose is to break the stigma of shame surrounding intrusive thoughts.

This calming and honest voicing of distressing thoughts has provided a peace of mind to fans living with similar mental health conditions. You only have to look at the Instagram comments underneath the single announcement to see its positive effect. One fan (@kiana.tingley) wrote ‘as someone who’s struggled with ocd since I was young, this song means everything to me. I’ve never felt so seen in a song’. In speaking, or in this case singing, the thoughts out loud, they lose their power – once spoken, the ‘Tiny Dictator’ loses his iron grip, one line at a time. We look forward to what more Deep Sea Creatures’ will bring us from Sophie May.
